History

The Philippines was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The name of the country was given by Ruy López de Villalobos during his expedition in 1543 when he called the islands of Samar and Leyte “Las Islas Filipinas” after King Philip II who was the reigning monarch of Spain at that time. The name later on came to refer to the entire archipelago.

The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world. It has a rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences. Prior to Spanish colonization in 1521, the Filipinos had a rich culture and were trading with the Chinese and the Japanese.

Spain’s colonization brought about the construction of Intramuros in 1571, a “Walled City” comprised of European buildings and churches, replicated in different parts of the archipelago.

The Philippines was held as a colony of Spain for more than 300 years. It declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898 with the hoisting of the Philippine flag by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite. But Spain ceded control of the islands to the United States by way of the Treaty of Paris..

In 1898, the Philippines became the first and only colony of the United States. Following the Philippine-American War, the United States brought widespread education to the islands. Filipinos fought alongside Americans during World War II, particularly at the famous battle of Bataan and Corregidor which delayed Japanese advance and saved Australia.

They then waged a guerilla war against the Japanese from 1941 to 1945. The Philippines regained its independence after the 2nd World War on July 4, 1946.

Are you ready to team-up with Foreign Clients?

Before plunging into the world of Virtual Assistants or working online, there things and situations that you need to consider: First and foremost you have to remember that you will be dealing with foreigners; Second, the contract or agreement; Third, what special skills and experiences can you render and share? Fourth, Can you work independently or less supervision?

1.    On foreign clients: What were your initial feelings when you thought of working for someone virtual: someone who lives on the other side of the world, who can only be reached by email or Skype and who speaks a different language? What do you feel of accepting foreign clients now?

Working with foreigners is not new to me. Locally I had the experience of working with Taiwanese, Chinese, German and the latter Australian. The only difference is working with them in the same place and environment making communications easier and faster.  Virtual employment now is even easier with modern technology both parties can communicate and be in contact anywhere and anytime. There are so many available softwares and apps online to complete and support business needs and undertakings. The key is constant, open communication and cooperation on both sides.

I find offshore clients more open and appreciative than local employers. In local employment you will encounter more competitions within the organization and workplace while working with offshore client you do not compete, you are a team. You compensate and help each other in order to reach the set goals.

2.     I’m special: Whether you are a newbie or veteran in this industry,  How do you assert your value to the world as a professional?

When I had my first job, I agreed to a minimum wage rate but it did not take long for me to achieve the salary I thought I deserve. With the years of experience and abilities I’ve learned and acquired   and held administrative position in different companies I am aware of the basic pay rates locally. I’ve also some ideas on foreign wage rates like that of Australia. Knowing my abilities and experiences I do set-up a salary range that I am willing to accept depending on the scope of the job.

More often, the evaluation on the quality and quantity of work that an employee or contractor; has already been established by the client or employer. The employee or applicant has the chance to show his/her ability to fulfill the job requirements during interviews but of course in addition to the resume that has been previously submitted.

3.   Reviewing contracts: In your opinion, what are the items that a job contract must contain aside from the job description and salary?

All contracts need the scope of work to be done, time and length of fulfillment and submission. There should also be clarification regarding softwares, apps, communications, deliveries, etc. on who will provide and some limitations if applicable. It can also include the time and manner of reporting and meeting schedules. It is also important to include statement and agreement on Trust and confidentiality since you are given the access to important and sensitive information.

If there provisions or statement in the contract that might appear unclear or something that one could not understand in the contract, it is not a crime to ask for clarification and inform the other party that you are not amenable on certain situation or provision.

4.  The keyword “team member” is always mentioned in the Professional Development tutorials. Differentiate a typical employee from a team member? What are the things a team member responsible for? How does being a team member help the business and your career as well?

Organization composes different teams such as departments or division. Every employee is a part of a particular team: the administrative, sales & marketing, productions, operations, logistics and even the group of managers. “Typical employee” is just concern in fulfilling or accomplishing the specific job or activity assigned to her/him and does not care whether some of her/his co-workers needs assistance, help or guidance. That doesn’t make sense, because an employee whether she/he is a manager, a supervisor, rank and file or labor –she/he is a part of a team. As member, each has to contribute to the accomplishment and success of the business. Yes, I could not discount the fact there are certain task that requires great deal of independent work and research while somewhere team effort is most effective.

Team effort always makes challenges lighter and easier to face and conquer. Team members compensate, inspire and help each other. Good communications brings harmony and camaraderie and can lead to friendship, trust and confidence.

The VA’s World

When you come across the word “virtual” what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

I had so much confusion so I looked-up the meaning of virtual in the dictionary and here are some examples:

American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:
  1. Existing or resulting in essence or effect though not in actual fact, form or name.
  2. Existing in the mind, especially as a product of the imagination.
  3. Computer Science Created, simulated, or carried on by means of a computer or computer network.
Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, 11th Edition
  1. The definition of virtual is something that exists in the mind, exists in essence but not in fact or created by a computer.
Webster Dictionary:
  1. Potential; having the power of acting or of invisible efficacy without the material or sensible part.
  2. Being in essence or effect, not in fact; as the virtual presence of a man in his agent or substitute.

Taking into consideration the above meanings and definitions – which do you think exactly described the word “Virtual Assistant?

If you ask me, not one – Virtual Assistants are real. They are not just essence or effect nor existing in the mind or production of the imagination alone. Neither are they computer generated and simulated nor just potential having the power of acting or of invisible efficacy without the material or sensible part.

Virtual assistants are professionals who are capable of doing diversified jobs and projects. Most of them have various experiences in the traditional or real office environment. They have college or university degrees and specialization, raging from administrative, sales & marketing, finance & accounting, research & encoding, SEO & social media, article writing & blogging, web & graphic design and a lot more as long as it can be done online or as they say “virtually”.

Virtual assistant may offer to work for a client full time, part time or per contract basis. I can be a group of individuals or a single person. Charges vary according to skills, abilities, qualification and the amount of work or job to be done.

Virtual assistants work at home employees servicing or working for organizations, companies or individuals on the other parts of the world.

Water Detoxification (Therapy)

Water therapy is a natural treatment for controlling diseases and keeping the body hydrated. All it needs is following instructions to a ‘T’ and drinking water.

Water therapy is helpful in curing diseases without using medicine.

When you reach home tired from work the only thing you want first is water. Nothing else refreshes better than a glass of cool water. Water is a very essential part of our life. It is a major constituent of our body and even of the earth. You may have been told by many people and doctors that drinking lots of water is very essential for your body. Water regulates different functions of body. It helps in digestion of food and formation of new blood. Life is incomplete without water.

Have you ever wondered how can water add quality to our life? Water possesses disease curing properties. By using water therapy many dreadful diseases like breast cancer, kidney stone, asthma etc. can be prevented. Along with allopathy and homeopathy the new option of water therapy is also available. Water therapy has proved that ‘water is life’ indeed. Read on, to know how ‘water therapy’ can become ‘life theory’

Benefits of water therapy

Water is free and has no calories. The Water Therapy Diet offers your body the amount of water you should consume daily. According to Dr. Griffin a licensed nutritionist, you need a minimum of 8 to 12 cups of water a day and since your body is made up of 55 to 60 percent of water, your body weight is able to fluctuate so dramatically and quickly. The Water Therapy Diet helps keep your water intake stable and consistent.

Water therapy is so simple that it does not require expert supervision or professional guidance. Have a quick look at benefits that can be gained with the help of water therapy. It will almost feel like water is a magical drink.

  • Helps detoxify your body through sweat and urine
  • Helps you get glowing and healthy skin
  • Helps maintain body temperature
  • Help expelling waste products from the body
  • Water therapy helps to control anemia, rheumatism, general paralysis, obesity, arthritis, sinusitis, tachycardia, giddiness, cough, leukemia, bronchitis, meningitis, hyperacidity, dysentery, gastroenteritis, uterus cancer, rectal piodapse, eye-disease, ophthalmic hemorrhage, irregular menstruation, laryngitis, headache and many other diseases
  • Helps control constipation in 1 day, acidity in 2 days, diabetes in 7 days, cancer in 4 weeks, pulmonary TB in 3 months, gastric in 10 days and BP & hypertension in 4 weeks

Disadvantage of water therapy

When you do not have a limit for doing things they may become a threat. Too much of a good thing can also pose a harm. This is true in the case of water therapy also. When water intake is not controlled while undergoing water therapy it may cause danger. It is because our body has limited capacity of throwing the excessive water. If this limit is crossed, body can face critical condition known as water poisoning or hyper hydration. This can expose a human body to the risk of brain damage or heart failure.

So to avoid any risk you should always consult professional or doctors before undergoing any such therapy. It is important to know the pros and cons of any treatment, diet or therapy that you plan to take up. Practice water therapy according to given instructions and avoid overdoing it. Remember, too much of anything can be bad. Maintain a balance and enjoy the goodness of the wonder drink called, water.

Human beings can survive approximately 30 to 40 days without food but without water your life can end in 3 to 5 days, says Phyllis A. Balch author of “Prescription for Nutritional Healing.” Without a sufficient amount of water, you can poison yourself with your own metabolic waste or toxins. Inadequate water intake can result in excess body fat, poor muscle tone and digestive problems, to name a few. The water therapy diet may need to be altered for medical purposes and is not backed by scientific documentation; it is imperative to consult with your health practitioner beforehand.

Instructions for following the water therapy

You can prevent and even get rid of health problems by only drinking water. All you have to do is strictly follow these instructions.

  • Drink 4-5 glasses (at least 160 ml per glass )of water as soon as you get up in the morning before brushing your teeth.
  • Don’t eat or drink anything for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, you may eat and drink.
  • Half an hour to 45 minutes before meals, drink 1 to 2 glasses of water
  • Drink 1 to 2 glasses of water 15 minutes after meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
  • You should not eat or drink anything for 2 1/2 hours .
  • Avoid taking alcoholic beverages the previous night
  • Drink water thrice a day if you are suffering from Arthritis or Rheumatism. You should drink 1.5 liters of water each time.
  • Avoid eating or having any other drink one hour before and after drinking water in morning
  • You should continue this routine for one week.
  • Consult your doctor to find out whether water therapy will suit your body or not if you are ill or are already having a health problem.

Initially, the idea of consuming 4 to 5 glasses of water in the morning may seem daunting. However, you can balance it out by drinking 2-3 glasses of water first and then wait a few minutes to drink the other remaining water required. The elderly, sick or those who may be unable to consume sizeable amounts of water may want to start off gradually and then work up to 4 glasses of water. Also, it may be best to use filtered water to diminish any parasites or other harmful substances.

Good Luck!!!

Liver and Gall Bladder Detoxification

The liver is the main organ responsible for distributing and maintaining the body’s “fuel” supply. Furthermore, its activities include the breaking down of complex chemicals and the synthesis of protein molecules. The liver acts as a cleansing and filtration device; it also deactivates hormones, alcohol, and medicinal drugs. Its task is to modify these biologically active substances so that they lose their potentially harmful effects — a process known as detoxification. Specialized cells in the liver’s blood vessels (Kupffer cells) mop up harmful elements and infectious organisms reaching the liver from the gut. The liver excretes the waste materials resulting from these actions via its bile duct network.

A healthy liver receives and filters 3 pints of blood per minute and produces 1 to 1.5 quarts of bile every day. This ensures that all the activities in the liver and in the rest of the body run smoothly and efficiently. Obstructive stones consisting of hardened bile (termed “intrahepatic gallstones” by Johns Hopkins University) greatly undermine the liver’s ability to detoxify any externally supplied and internally generated harmful substances in the blood. These stones also prevent the liver from delivering the proper amounts of nutrients and energy to the right places in the body at the right time. This upsets the delicate balance in the body, known as “homeostasis,” thus leading to disruption of its systems and undue stress on its organs.

A clear example for such a disturbed balance is an increased concentration of the endocrine hormones estrogen and aldosterone in the blood. These hormones, produced in both men and women, are responsible for the correct amount of salt and water retention. When stones congest the gallbladder and the liver’s bile ducts, these hormones may not be broken down and detoxified sufficiently. Hence, their concentration in the blood rises to abnormal levels, causing tissue swelling and water retention. Most oncologists consider elevated estrogen levels to be the leading cause of breast cancer among women. In men, high levels of this hormone can lead to excessive development of breast tissue and weight gain.

Over 60 percent of the American population is overweight or obese. Men, women, and children in this condition suffer mainly from fluid retention (with relatively minor fat accumulation). The retained fluids help trap and neutralize noxious substances that the liver can no longer remove from the body. This helps the overweight or obese person to survive a major, possibly fatal, toxicity crisis such as a heart attack, septic poisoning, or massive infection. The side effect of fluid retention in the tissues, however, is that it causes these toxins and other harmful waste matter (metabolic waste and dead cell material) to accumulate in various parts of the body and further congest the pathways of circulation and elimination. Wherever in the body the storage capacity for toxins and waste is exceeded, symptoms of illness begin to occur.

Cleansing the liver and gallbladder from all accumulated stones helps to restore homeostasis, balances weight, and sets the precondition for the body to heal itself. The liver flush is also one of the best precautionary measures you can take to protect yourself against nearly every kind of illness, known or unknown.

You can often expect dramatic results even from the first cleanse. The morning after, you will have bowel movements mixed with food particles and floating green and tan colored stones in all shapes and sizes. The ones that float contain cholesterol and the ones that sink contain heavier toxic metals.

How to do The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush

Materials:

  •  Apple Juice (enough to drink 24oz a day for 6 days in a row).
  • Epsom salts
  • 2 grapefuits or oranges
  • Olive Oil

Note: Due to the high-sugar content of apple juice, you can instead drink Malic Acid powder mixed with water. This supplement softens the stones in the liver and gallbladder without the complications of apple juice.

Ways/Methods of Liver/Gall Bladder Stone Flush

Days 1-6:

– Drink 24oz apple juice for 6 days.  The malic acid in the apple soften liver & gallstones.

Note: (No coffee, tea, soda, alcohol, sugar, animal products (this means flesh and fluids), flour, fried foods, heavy nuts, and smoking. It is also best to avoid foods that are cold or have been chilled. (Cold or chilled foods or drinks chill the liver, thereby making cleansing more difficult.)

Day 5:

Do a colonic to clear the colon so the stones can flush out.

Day 6:

Have a very light breakfast.

2pm – light lunch

5pm – Make two separate concoctions:

1. 4 tablespoons of epsom salts + 24oz water (divided into 4 servings)

2. Juiced Grapefruit

6pm – Drink 1 serving of epsom salt water

8pm – Drink another

10pm – Mix 4oz grapefruit juice w 4oz olive oil and drink it.  Then lay down on bed with head elevated for 20 minutes.  You’ll feel the stones relaxing.  Vomit if you need to.  After 20 minutes; go to sleep.

Day 7:

6am – Drink the third mixture of salts.

8am – Drink the final serving of salts.

*By 10am you should be on the toilet.

Done!

Follow up with another enema to ensure stones don’t remain in your system.

Note: It may take up to 12 cleanses until you’re stone-free.

Eight years ago, I have done a Liver/Gall Bladder Flush. This is effective but I wonder if you can go on without food in four days. I got this from a magazine article by Miss Maricel Laxa. (Here’s how).

Materials:

  •   4 gallons Apple Juice (natural & unsweetened)
  •   4 gallons Mineral/Alkaline/Distilled Water
  •   Virgin Olive Oil
  •    Lemon

Instructions:

  • Drink 1 gallon Apple juice and 1 gallon Water each day (for four days). You will not feel hunger because of the apple juice (but I’m not sure with regards to your food cravings).
  • On the fifth day continue the routine of drinking the apple juice & water, before going to bed – drink about ¼ cup of Virgin Olive Oil, Sip the lemon juice to avoid vomiting the Olive Oil.
  • Lie on your right side. About an hour or two you’ll feel the desire of going to the toilet.
  • Be sure it’s clean so you’ll see what have you just disposed. There should be no foul smell at all since you have not been having solid foods for four days.
  • You should see solid waste similar to stone or rock wrapped with a plastic like substance (this is the olive oil).

Thank You, Sacred VA Institute Team!

My Graduation Speech…Sacred VA Institute…May 3, 2013

Hi Everyone! This Is Anselma (a.k.a.  Skippoz N Feelizia), you can call me Thelma.

I would like to thank Miss Christiane Holbrook, Miss Maribeth Brown-Oliver and the rest of the Sacred VA Institute team for giving me the opportunity to join and learn most valuable tricks, tips and knowledge on becoming a VA.

I’ve been through online search of Virtual Assistant sites, groups or teams for over three years now. And the scenarios are all the same. You sign up, fill up forms, submit your resume, and they will send you job list where you can choose to apply or bid on a project. I just had a recent experience -it was on a group founded and managed by an Australian.

They have offices in the Philippines. And you have to attend a seminar or briefing for possible placement. And to add they don’t give training, you will be matched based on your qualifications. I did and fortunately got an assignment. It lasted about 4 months. But one thing that bothered me was the set-up. All communications have to be coordinated via their site and personnel, you cannot discuss rate, time, requirements, and everything coming from the client including instructions were sent to an email account they have provided, communications are done on a Skype account created and provided by them. Plus the screen capture every 3 minutes and reply to their messages every 20 minutes.

I am used to communicating with my immediate head or clients. I’d like to discuss the requirements, situations, possibilities and alternative solutions. That makes me feel more confident in performing my jobs.

That’s the reason why I became so interested when I came across SVAI. I’ve listened to the videos and signed up but it still took me weeks to submit my Mission Statement and almost lost a slot. Blame it on the white smoke on the Chimney in Vatican!

The moment I received an email from Miss Maribeth Brown Oliver with the instructions I became so overwhelm and excited, went through all the lessons, created and built up my WP blog. With the excitement I forgot to join the SVAI Community Support Group. So when it was time for me to post my link I could not come in because I was not yet a member. That’s why of all the members I was the only one who did not get a welcome message.

Going through the Lessons with the directions of Maribeth via videos supported with PDF files and with that of Forest Linden made it easier for me to understand and follow step by step. With the topics presented by someone with experience and knowledge required from VAs made me feel confident and at ease. That I can now claim I am a real VA, a graduate of SVAI who has taught me not only the hard skills but to face and handle various situations that can be encountered during employment and engagement.

Being with SVAI community means you are in a team or a group of people who have the passion and heart for helping people; aiming for a better life, better community and a better world to live in.

Once again, I salute and thank Miss Maribeth Brown Oliver for this wonderful endeavor.  It’s a rare chance to meet young people like you.

To Miss Christiane Holbrook, Thank you for trusting, helping and uplifting the spirit of Filipino VAs.

To the rest of SVAI Team, Thank you.

To the SVAI Students, This is a rare chance given and extended to us. Make it worthwhile and let’s make this a friendly, talented, trusted, confident, reliable, professional community of Filipino Virtual Assistants.

My Graduation Speech-SVAI

What are the Easiest & Cheapest Ways to get Healthy?

When God created the universe, He gifted the all his creations, living and non–living; place to stay, purpose to exist and abundance of resources to for nourishment. Man was given extra-special attributes being created in his own image and likeness. Man wan is the highest form of creation. Given the brain to think, analyze, process, convert, discover, perform, and most of all free will to choose his path.

Because of this freedom, man went to the extremes of discovery, development, invention, production and implementation which lead to distraction and deterioration of mother earth rather than make it a better and enticing place to live in. Distraction was not limited and confined to the planet we call mother earth but extended to the resources made available to man as free and abundant. These free resources are air, water, space, sunshine and food. Yes, these are necessities for our existence and integral part in in beauty and wellness.

God is so good and generous; He has given us all these necessities for free! But because of our own doings, abundance became scarce.  We have to buy mineral water for assurance that we are not taking in contaminated water. We have to go out of metro to breathe fresh air. We cannot prolong our exposure to the sun because of the thinning ozone layer. Fast & instant food is all over tempting us and craves to have them for lunch, snacks, dinner, etc. We can’t afford to get enough sleep because we are usually caught up in traffic on the way home from the office and we have to watch our favorite late night show on TV.

To get a better understanding how all these affect us, we need to review the benefits we derive from them.

  1. Water
  • Transports nutrients and oxygen into cells
  • Protects our vital organ
  • Moisturizes the air in lungs
  • Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Helps with metabolism
  • Detoxifies
  • Protects and moisturizes our joints

    2. Fresh Air

  • Fresh air is good for digestion.
  • Improves blood pressure and heart rate.
  • It makes you happier.
  • Strengthens immune system.
  • Fresh air cleans lungs.
  • Gives more energy and sharper mind.

       3. Sunshine

  • Reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes.
  •  Reduce cancer risk.
  • Strong bones for better bone health.
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Reduce stroke risk.
  • Sleep better
  • Protect eye health
  • Boost immunity
  • Improve metabolism

        4. Food

  • Next to air and water, food is needed for all living things to survive. Man does not only need food but good food or good diet.
  • Weight Control
  • Immune System Health
  • Heart Health
  • Energy

        5. Rest/Sleep

  • Why good and enough sleep is important?
  •  Most People Are Exhausted.  Fatigue is epidemic.
  • All Healing Requires Extra Sleep.
  • Cleansing and Rebuilding the Body Require Energy.
  • Elimination of toxins,
  • Most Emotional Processing Occurs During Sleep.
  • Spiritual development

Not being able to maximize the benefits or just even the minimal balance requirements of our body we need to do something to restore the balance. There are lots of ways to do these but we have to spend not only so much time but money. Taking food supplements, taking diet pills, doing some strenuous exercises which most of the time are not effective or they don’t do much because we lack patience in following them.

What are the cheapest and easiest ways to restore the balance in our body to keep healthy?

The answer will also be using the five (5) necessities: water, air, food, sunshine & sleep in doing and performing; Detoxification, Breathe Thin exercises, Therapy & Massage, Alternative & Traditional Medicine and Healthy Recipes.

Daily Accomplishment Report

In a traditional and real office environment, activity and accomplishment reports are still needed particularly in production and sales departments. These are most needed in a virtual employment situation to document what have transpired or have been accomplished through the day. This does not require so much time and besides they are for your own protection rather than a requirement of the client. It can develop trust and confidence between the VA and the Client.

Daily accomplishment report can be done in word docs, excel, pdf and send it as an attachment to an email or can be incorporated in the message itself. If you wish you can do both.

Here’s a sample of Daily Report sent to client through Email.

What are the best motivations for Virtual Assistants?

In this talk of Daniel Pink, “The puzzle of Motivation”, he cited the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and its effectiveness in handling and managing businesses. There are many ways motivation. In actuality, people are motivated by both internal and external factors, as there are always mixtures of reasons why they achieve, behave, learn and react. Personality and self-concept often determine whether or not you will be intrinsically or extrinsically motivated.

Let’s first clarify what intrinsic and extrinsic motivation mean.

Intrinsic means internal or inside of yourself. When you are intrinsically motivated, you enjoy an activity, course or skill development solely for the satisfaction of learning and having fun, and you are determined to strive inwardly in order to be competent. There is not external inducement when intrinsic motivation is the key to behavior or outcome.

When you are motivated intrinsically, you have fun and look for skill development and competency, personal accomplishment and excitement.

Like for example in my case: I’ve joined Sacred VA Institute because I am so keen on increasing or upgrading my skills and capabilities as a virtual assistant. (Just to give you an idea, I have 2 nephews and a niece with IT Engineering Course – well I sometimes ask them on topics to teach and guide me, they oblige but they go on “bra-ta- ta-ta- tat, bra-ta- ta-ta- tat” expecting me to catch every bullet being fired at the same time. So I end up telling them ok, I think it’s better for me to turn to “Google” and “Youtube” instead). Let’s go back to SVA, which I think one of the best decisions I made. Why? You can do the lessons at your own pace. You might think I am a bit slow or lazy doing things, Nope! In fact, I am a person who wants to get things done immediately, once I have the instructions and all the materials; I will never stop until I’m done.

The reason is not getting the job but the inner joy that it brings me being able to follow instructions, learn and do things new to me. I may not have done great but somehow I’ll be on my way of doing better if not the best.

Extrinsic means external or outside of yourself. This type of motivation is everywhere and frequently used within society. When people are motivated to behave, achieve, learn or do based on a highly regarded outcome, rather than for the fun, development or learning provided within an experience, they are being extrinsically motivated.

Trophies, medals, money, discounts, grades, entrance to programs or schools, higher commission percentages, new clothes and losing weight are all examples of extrinsic motivators. In childhood, bribery is used, schools use grades, trophies and academic recognition based on good behavior, shops & groceries use discount cards and coupons to save you money while you shop at their store and corporations use bonuses and commission scales to encourage growth and boost sales.

There are ways and methods of motivating employees and is a central point of concern for managers and owners of businesses. Extrinsic motivation is inherently easier for management to provide than intrinsic motivation. The latter form of motivation is a far more complex and internal state of being, involving idiosyncratic levels of satisfaction and accomplishment. While some progressive managers attempt to instill intrinsic motivation in their employees, it is much more common for managers and owners to rely on extrinsic factors such as pay increases and other financial benefits.

Alienation in the workplace is a difficult and common problem that undermines productivity, employee morale and the sense of intrinsic satisfaction. Companies will find it difficult to motivate alienated employees to perform at their highest level. Employees who identify closely with the work that they do take pride in its quality that is independent of how much they earn or how others evaluate their skills. Intrinsic motivation emerges out of identification with the work. When an individual views an activity as an expression of his inner self, he will take care to do it well and take satisfaction in the work.

This does not differ much from a Client and Virtual Assistant scenario. Working from a distant, relying only few briefing and instructions, a VA is left alone to do her job base on her own understanding and judgment. He/She may deliver exactly, more or less than the result you need but she does not have the means knowing without being told or informed.

Managing and motivating Virtual assistants are two different things. Like what Daniel Pink mentioned in the video that Management is for compliance while engagement is better achieved by self-direction. Most virtual assistants prefer to work on tasks at their own time, phase and techniques. That’s what they call autonomy, the urge to direct their own lives. Give them the chance to master their jobs, the desire to get better and better at something that matters. Make them feel that they are serving their purpose, doing what they do in the service for something larger than themselves.

Virtual Assistants have the obligations to deliver the results required of them but the client has contribution in making or turning his/her VA to be the best. Communication is a must and once they both have learned and understood each other, a beautiful and perfect partnership is on the way.
